Anthony O'BrienA minute of psychology that will make everything absolutely clear to you. You’ll understand how to live this life, how our brain works. And at the end, I’ll sum it all up with one phrase you can use in any confusing situation and it will bring you peace.
Look, our brain works according to the principle of dominance, which was discovered by the physiologist Alexei Ukhtomsky.
This means that one single thought — one strong thought or emotion — suppresses all the others. That dominant idea begins to control our selective attention. It forces us to highlight everything in the world that relates specifically to that emotion or thought. And then a powerful cognitive distortion kicks in — something called confirmation bias.
That means the brain starts actively searching for evidence to support that thought or emotion. And everything that contradicts it — the brain begins to ignore or even perceive as hostile.
Let’s go straight to some examples. There’s a phenomenon called the Frequency Illusion. What does it say?
It means that when some new piece of information appears in your life — like your friend buys a new car, or you learn a new word — suddenly, you start seeing it everywhere. Why is it called an illusion? Because it was always there. But now, you’ve developed a dominant idea in your head that sets the rules.
So in reality, you’re no longer the one controlling your attention. Our vision works the same way. When you look at one thing, everything else becomes background. A simple example — your nose. You always see it, but don’t notice it. The moment you pay attention to it, everything else fades.
Our brain works the same way. Our thoughts, our emotions — all of them follow this principle.
So what does that mean? What’s the one phrase you can always repeat to yourself — the one that will always help?
Whatever you focus on in life — that’s what you get. You get in life what you give your attention to. That’s it.
If you’re convinced that money comes only through intense struggle — then that’s how it will be. Your brain will search for proof of it. But if you change your paradigm, shift your thinking, start believing that some things in life can come with ease — your brain will begin to find evidence for that instead. That’s the principle you need to use.
Now you know something powerful. You don’t need tons of psychological information. I’ve broken it all down for you. And believe me — this is exactly how it works. If you understand how this principle functions, everything in your life will start to fall into place very quickly.
