THE HIDDEN DANGERS IN YOUR COSMETICS Are you aware of what's really in your beauty products? Many cosmetics contain ingredients that could be harmful to your health. Here’s the list of ingredients to steer clear of: Parabens (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl): Used as preservatives, parabens can mimic estrogen and disrupt hormonal balance, potentially leading to increased risk of breast cancer. Phthalates (DBP, DEHP, DEP and others): Commonly found in perfumed products, these chemicals are linked to endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, and increased risk of birth defects. Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (FRPs): Used in many cosmetic products to prevent bacteria growth. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that can also cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) / Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): These surfactants can cause skin irritation and lead to problems like dermatitis. SLES may also be contaminated with a substance called 1,4-dioxane, which is possibly carcinogenic. Synthetic fragrances: The term "fragrance" or "parfum" can hide a cocktail of over 3,000 chemicals, including hormone disruptors and allergens. Fragrance formulas are protected under federal law's classification of trade secrets and therefore can remain undisclosed. Lead and other heavy metals: Found in lipsticks and other cosmetic products, lead is a neurotoxin and can be harmful even at small doses. Mineral Oil: A byproduct of petroleum that can clog pores and suffocate the skin. Oxybenzone: Commonly used in sunscreens, this chemical has been linked to hormone disruption and potential damage to coral reefs. Triclosan: An antimicrobial chemical that can disrupt thyroid function and contribute to antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Talc: Used in makeup and baby powder, talc can be contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen. Your skin is your largest organ, and what you put on it can be absorbed into your bloodstream in seconds. Always read labels and choose products with safe, natural ingredients.
