Travel to Korea 🇰🇷

Steps:

Slow Down in Seoul’s Neighborhoods

Skip the tourist hotspots and explore local areas like Ikseon-dong or Euljiro. These mix old and new, with trendy cafés next to family shops. Try Bingsu and chat with locals—it’s a great way to connect with the culture.

Spend a Day in a Temple

Take a train to the countryside for a temple stay. Live like a monk—wake up early, meditate, and eat simple meals. It’s a chance to slow down, reflect, and practice mindfulness.

Challenge Your Taste Buds

Visit night markets like Gwangjang or Jagalchi and try five new foods. Go for adventurous dishes like live octopus or spicy tteokbokki. Push your limits and ask locals for their favorite recommendations.

Learn Korean Etiquette by Doing

Take time to learn the basics of Korean etiquette, from proper greetings (a bow) to how to hold chopsticks properly. Visit a traditional Korean restaurant, where you’ll sit on the floor and eat with locals. Practice pouring soju for others, as per Korean custom.

Visit Jeju Island

If time allows, make a trip to Jeju Island, known for its volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, and hiking trails. It’s a perfect escape from city life, with stunning natural beauty at every turn.

Opportunity costs:

  • Cultural Adjustments: You’ll need to adapt to Korean customs, like bowing to show respect and removing your shoes before entering homes and temples. It’s a small effort but enriches your experience.
  • Language Barrier: While many Koreans speak English in cities, rural areas might be more challenging. Learning basic Korean phrases will help, but be ready for occasional language barriers.
  • Time Commitment: To fully appreciate Korea, you’ll need at least a week or two. You’ll be moving from cities to countryside and possibly an island, so it’s important to budget enough time.
  • Wellness:

    Notes:

Be Open to New Foods: Korean cuisine is diverse and full of flavor. Don’t be afraid to try dishes like bibimbap, kimchi, and street food like tteokbokki. You might discover a new favorite!

Engage with Locals: Make an effort to chat with locals. Whether it’s asking for recommendations or joining a local tour, interacting with people will deepen your understanding of Korean culture.

Visit a Jimjilbang (Korean Bathhouse): For a unique Korean experience, visit a traditional bathhouse. It’s a great way to relax, detox, and get a true taste of Korean wellness culture.

Embrace the Mix of Old and New: Korea seamlessly blends old traditions with cutting-edge modernity. Take time to appreciate both sides—from ancient temples to towering skyscrapers.
